A Little Oxygen, A Lot of Cleaning Power
Fed up with harsh chlorine bleach? Percarbonate of soda, also known as natural bleach or oxygen bleach, is a handy alternative for tackling stubborn stains, brightening laundry and freshening up around the home.
When dissolved in warm water, it releases oxygen to help lift stains, break down dirt and deodorise. It's a useful addition to your low-waste cleaning cupboard, without relying on chlorine bleach.
How to use it

Laundry stains: Dissolve 1–2 tablespoons in a bowl of warm water, soak stained whites for 1–2 hours, then wash as usual.

Whiter whites: Add 1–2 tablespoons to your usual laundry detergent in the washing machine to help brighten whites and lift stains. Check your machine's instructions first.

Cleaning cloths and tea towels: Dissolve 1–2 tablespoons in a bowl of warm water and soak for around an hour before washing as normal.

Mugs and cups: Add 1 teaspoon to a mug, fill with warm water, leave for 15–30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
A few things to know: It works best in warm water and should be dissolved just before use. Avoid using it on wool, silk, leather or delicate fabrics, and test colourfastness on an inconspicuous area first. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin, avoid contact with eyes, and never mix it with other cleaning products.
It comes in home-compostable kraft packaging, so there's less plastic to worry about. Once opened, transfer it to a sealed container and store somewhere cool and dry. If composting the packaging at home, cut it into smaller pieces to help it break down more easily.
